| Bush Signs Child Health Program Extension Into Law
Bush on Saturday signed into law a temporary extension of a popular health insurance program for children after months of deadlock with the Democratic-led Congress. The legislation extends the program that covers about 6.6 million poor children through March 31, 2009, leaving decisions about renewal to the next president and Congress. The legislation also provides a 0.5 percent increase for Medicare doctors for six months, delaying a scheduled 10 percent pay cut. Bush twice vetoed more ambitious earlier bills that would have expanded the children's health program to cover about 10 million children in low and moderate income families, despite bipartisan support. Bush and Democrats have been locked in a fight over budget and spending and the president said the previous bills were too costly and would push more children into government-run health care instead of private plans.
Venture fundings rise in '07
Venture capital investments in U.S. companies continued a strong upward climb in 2007 as venture firms continued to raise ever larger funds - a signal that the nation's entrepreneurial economy remains resilient amid fears of a recession. Venture investments in U.S. start-ups topped $29.4 billion in 2007, nearly an 11 percent increase over 2006 and a six-year high, according to a leading industry report. The money went into 3,813 deals, representing the busiest year for venture investing since 2001, when $40.6 billion went into 4,500 start-ups - even after the dot-com bubble began to deflate. Venture firms reported raising $34.7 billion in 2007 for future investments, up 9 percent from 2006. The quarterly MoneyTree Report, focusing on venture investments within the United States, is produced by the National Venture Capital Association and PricewaterhouseCoopers, based on data from Thomson Financial.
The team nobody likes
I still like teams and players that actually excel at their sport. This is why I loathe the Maple Leafs so much. Hopefully, if the Pats win, they will also bring their Super Bowl trophy to Halifax as the Red Sox did with their World Series trophy a few years ago... Go Pats Go!
